Colson and I are helping out the charity Growing Change as they and the community of Laurinburg, NC, recover from Hurricane Florence. Today was our first delivery of cleaning supplies and gift cards. This is a great small charity with minimal overhead doing tremendous work in a community with a poverty rate of 36% (US poverty rate is 12.7%) and a serious gang violence problem. Growing Change is doing some unique and very powerful work to help young people find a positive path by converting a decommissioned prison (there are 6 decommissioned prisons nearby) into a sustainable farm run by the young people that Growing Change is helping.
If you haven't donated to help with Hurricane Recovery yet, Growing Change is a great charity. You can donate directly on their website.
Here is Colson and Noran Sanford of Growing Change at the Scottish Highland Games in Laurinburg, NC. I haven't posted in ages, but Colson is a highly competitive epee fencer at age 15, and it turns out that Noran fenced epee at UNC.
Colson and me with Represenatative Pierce of Laurinburg, NC. He is one great guy!
Why did we decide to help Laurinburg? Long story short we almost got washed away there the night of Hurricane Florence. We were returning home from a trip and we were a couple of hours too late. We literally watched the town go under water and watched people leaving their flooded homes in real time. It was a very impactful situation to watch and then drive away from. So much so that we are helping as we can. We would greatly appreciate your help too!
