The more I dive into the Whole 30 my food test became “Will this food spike insulin production?” which leads to disease and inflammation. Pretty simple approach until Colson became a real grump and I did some research: Colson’s Rice Reintroduction a Success. Because of the research I had some new things to chew on (did not intend that pun but like it!) and I needed to grow my understanding of food. One of my goals for Thanksgiving weekend was to compare food information and blog about it, but Dr. Mercola beat me to it with respect to two recommended approaches (imagine a flashing “read this” sign here) and he did it better than I would have.
In addition to these two approaches, be sure check out the Archevore, which has been highly recommended to me by the paleo doc I know.
If you are deep into the healthy food world and have confusion about any carbs, this article will give you some good stuff to ponder. For me it means that I will stop eating some of Colson’s occasional rice. For Ryan – I don’t know if he will stop. The Pandora’s Box of rice has been opened and I don’t know if he will close it.
For Colson I don’t know what it means. He only eats rice two times a week at most, but it really has improved his mood. One of the arguments in the article is that grumpy people aren’t getting enough fat and that they need more fat, not a carb like white rice. The only place that I can possibly see introducing more fat for Colson is via a coconut milk smoothie, which is on my list of things to try, but I don’t know if even with that smoothie I can slam his rice Pandora’s Box.
Maybe I just won’t mention that rice is disappearing – he is eight and into being eight, enjoying his papa-made Harry Potter wand and playing with his legos, not wondering what to do about rice. Maybe he won’t even miss it. And if he doesn’t miss it and his mood doesn’t deteriorate when I up his food fat, then Ryan will be off of rice too because he won’t undermine Colson.
So grateful that Dr. Mercola wrote this stuff up!
