If you are a believer in real food and all of the natural animal fat and coconut oil that comes with it, you have probably clogged your kitchen sink more than ever. For me, it is a couple of time a year experience, when prior to that it never happened.
What to do? My natural reaction (or unnatural if you will) is to go for the store bought mega-toxic drain cleaner, but at 10:00 last night we were out and the kitchen sink was scary! It is amazing how it can be free flowing one minute and blocked the next. My brilliant husband got online and looked up natural solutions. The first hit was to use baking soda and vinegar. Not in a million years did I think that would work, but I was wrong as wrong can be and will not purchase another commercial drain cleaner.
Here is the link in case you are in need: Homemade Drain Cleaner. As an added note, our drain stopper was not strong enough to block the drain after applying the concoction, so we filled our blender with water and rested it on the drain stopper.

I love the internet :-)
Also, when the flow is still going but slowly, you can run really hot water through it, which removes some of the fat.

You can also fix your clogged sink by pouring hot water to melten down fats and oils.

Both of you did well! Those who are not familiar with this kind of scenario might panic in the middle of the night out of ignorance. It’s a good thing that there are DIY guides available at our disposal online. I bet your husband didn’t take a lot of time finding a better solution, since many people share and recommend solutions regarding this. Even plumbers and plumbing businesses do it for their clients!

Nice! It’s both fun and fulfilling to do do-it-youself projects from time to time. :) Also, there are other various home remedies that could do wonders for clogged drains, sinks and tubs. Pouring hot water on a weekly basis could help clear and prevent clogged drains. Another way is to dispense salt, which is an active ingredient in clearing out the blockage, and hot water together on the drain and then flush.

Another home remedy for this problem is to put 1/4 cream of tartar on a baking soda and salt solution. Stir it in a jar or a bowl and pour ¼ cup of the solution onto the clogged drain, followed by two cup of boiling water. Wait for the solution to reach the clog, and then flush it down with cold water. The mixture would clear your pipes in a non-corrosive way.

Darryl and Jaye both gave nice home remedies for clogged drains. Well, I'll just add something to their tips. After clearing the sink with the baking soda and hot water, I suggest that you pour a slight amount of lemon's juice to the sink in order to remove the stinky smell caused by the debris.

Have you ever gotten anything up from the sink? our upstairs bathroom is having issues but we got a rubbery gray matter but it's still clogged. I knew of the BS/Vinegar, am letting it set. We use CO toothpaste but have never had issues w/ the downstairs so not sure that is the problem up here.

Thank you so much for the DIY drain cleaner info!
I used coconut oil last night and my sink clogged.....I freaked out!
I put baking soda, sushi vinegar (I did not have a regular one.lol), and boiling hot water then let it set for awhile, but I noticed that water did not go down.....so I used a plunger :)
Yaaaaaaaaay! It worked like a magic!
and think about it...if you used chemicals, you can not use a plunger because it may splash on your skin :( , but Hey, this DIY drain cleaner has not problem at all!
Thanks again!

My 3 year old just poured our cup of grease (like the access grease from bacon that you pour into a cup so it doesn't go down your drain) into our sink. Needless to say, it's totally clogged now. I'm kind of freaking out about it because we're hosting a Valentines Day party tomorrow. Hopefully this baking soda and vinegar trick works for grease! http://www.whmlv.com/Services/
