Here is what we found:
- Ants very much
prefer McDonalds, but they dabble in Organic/Free Range hamburger.
- Flies prefer
Organic/Free Range, but they dabble in McDonalds.
- The yellow
jacket likes McDonalds better than free-range organic.
- The mystery
eater (most likely my cat) who moved the organic/free range off of the
plate seems to prefer organic.
- The
miscellaneous tiny beatles that I didn’t film seem to have no preference.
Check out the video here, but first, let me say that I know
it is cheesy and I am living out my tv announcer career fantasy (Weather Channel
during a hurricane here I come!): Hamburger Experiment – Bugs.
I wonder why the ants and yellow jacket prefer McDonalds?
From the McDonalds ingredients listing, it doesn’t appear that sugar or other
sweetener is used: http://www.mcdonalds.ca/pdfs/IngredientFactsEN.pdf.
I need to buy another whole McDonald’s hamburger to monitor
its decomposition or lack thereof. The decomposition of the current hamburger
could be influenced if the flies laid eggs on it. We are keeping the remains of
both initial test hamburgers to see if eggs were laid and if there was a
preference of hamburger for that purpose.
Tune in again in a week or so to see how our hamburger
decomposition experiments are going.
