My family just completed its first year of
super duper awesome healthy eating. We began a year ago following the Gut and
Psychology Syndrome (GAPS) diet www.gapsdiet.com
at the recommendation of Ken Morehead, our Dr. of Oriental Medicine www.orientalhealthsolutions.com.
We began this diet to cure Colson of his sneezies (aka seasonal allergies) and
along the way we accomplished so much more. Here is a summary of our victories
for the year.
Colson’s
sneezies – We thought we had these beat,
but two weeks ago they reappeared. They only lasted for two weeks. This is a
huge victory. Five years of sneezing, supporting the tissue industry, and lots
of atomic snoring have been compressed into two weeks! Colson is so much
happier and we are so relieved!
Colson asked if I thought he could get rid of
the two weeks of sneezies, and I said yes, if we go fully back on GAPS. He said
“let’s do it,” and I said ok, but I wasn’t quite ready to do it yet. I have
been enjoying homemade hummus, rice and some other beans, and I am not quite
ready to give them up yet. Oh…and the sweet potatoes! I have missed them!
Laura’s
sneezies – same outcome as Colson, as far
as the two weeks of July allergies are concerned. This is a huge improvement
for me! On an even more fun note, my dog allergies have declined dramatically,
and I am up for getting a dog once we purchase a house.
Ryan’s ADHD – His foggy head is CLEAR for the first time in his
life. Incredible! His last work involves recovering his adrenal glands, which
are fried by over two decades of mega-strong coffee that was necessary to clear
the fog. Ryan is just about free from the grip of caffeinated coffee, and once
he is and his adrenals regain their function (about six months), Ken says that
the final brain function improvements will complete.
Ryan’s
exhaustion – Still here. He is beginning to
see improvements now that he is almost off caffeinated coffee. His back pain
has dramatically decreased, but it is still here. It was gone for a few months,
but it seems to have returned when he began a four month detox that appeared
out of the blue. We think the back pain is related to his failing adrenal
glands. Amazing what too much coffee will do!
Ryan’s
detox – In full swing!! Hooray! Four
months and counting. It is clear to us now that he was just not healthy enough
to detox thoroughly during the first eight months on the GAPS diet. He was
floored with initial detox when we began, but then nothing severe until four months
ago, when a continual detox began. Lots of skin irritation and no relief. We
are trying some bentonite clay to see if that helps to pull the poisons out of
him, and a Far Infrared Sauna may also be in his near future.
Weight loss – We eat a high fat diet. Lots of coconut oil,
butter, animal fat and egg yolks. That would freak most people out. For us it
has resulted in Ryan’s losing 24 pounds and my losing about 12 pounds. We have
not put any weight back on after the rapid loss that occurred after starting
GAPS, and our food is delicious and decadent.
Laura’s
memory – Fantastic!! I have gone from remembering
almost nothing, to remembering almost everything. I no longer lose things, I
remember groceries, I can plan trips with multiple stops, I can focus on
lengthy professional meetings. I went from wondering what pre-Alzheimer’s was
to literally rejoicing daily about the return of my memory!!!
Laura’s
terrible dandruff – GONE! Very soon after starting
the GAPS diet. My thick hair has also returned.
Laura’s
aches and pains – GONE! The shoulder that I
injured when giving birth (I have no idea how) is now pain free. The back that
was fractured 13 years ago (that was due to a bad fall from a rope swing) no
longer gives me problems. Creaking and crackling bones are now whispering when
they do make a noise.
Laura’s
exhaustion – GONE! This is my biggest victory.
Instead of waking up for almost six years and having the first thought be that
I can’t wait to go to bed, I wake up and embrace the day and its many tasks. I
am able to get them done and still have a sense of completeness and wellness
that I haven’t experienced in almost six years.
Premenopause – GONE! I have aged five years since I began
premenopause, and I now have no symptoms and I am physically younger at age 43
than I was at age 38.
I love telling people that the older I get, the younger I feel. Even though time keeps moving on, and more hairs turn gray, and I have acquired a couple of wrinkles, it blows my mind that I feel so young compared to how I felt the preceding six years!
