I had a great visit with my Dr. of Oriental Medicine
last evening. I went to him to have what I think is a ganglion cyst checked
out. As is always the case, the quiet time there helps me to reflect on
whatever else may be going on with me and my family. One of the things I asked
about is Ryan’s under arm rash that we just cured with kefir, and the rash’s
possible link to raisins. While my Dr. could not examine Ryan he said that the
sugar from the raisins most likely triggered some flora that was exiting from
his armpits and decided to take up residence there. The way we eat detoxifies
the bad stuff, and the raisins were helping the bad stuff, so the bad stuff was
getting promoted and kicked out at the same time. It would make sense that kefir’s
probiotics would kill the rash culprits.
Here is what I learned about natural sugars. Raisins
have sugar. Lots of raisins equal lots of sugar. Large amounts of any kind of
sugar weaken the body. Ryan and I were focused on refined sugars weakening the
body, not unrefined, natural ones. The food cravings that Ryan is having, for
cake, ice cream, you name it, are caused by too much natural sugar. He has not
given into the cravings, and they will subside soon. His back spasms and mind
fog that I linked to a gazillion raisins a couple of weeks ago are fading. This
unintended experiment powerfully shows that there is no perfect path to health
and that when you veer too far, your body gives definite feedback.
Even my doctor, who is the best of the best among healthy eaters, veers off course when the perfect storm of events arises. I so enjoy him, because he makes the food/life journey fun and the stumbles along the way completely human and acceptable. The words of Kris Raphael, a person I follow on Twitter, echo what my Dr. told me: “…difficulties are merely guidance and opportunity.” I fully expect that we will have much more guidance and opportunity coming our way, in the most fun and surprising ways.
