If you have been following along for the last 3½ years, you know that this heavy duty food journey began because Colson, now 8, rarely breathes through his nose. He was born that way. Just search my blog for “nose” and you will see how much we have worked on it. Because he has been forever a mouth breather, on top of less quality sleep, his chin is not fully developing. The ENT said that we had until puberty to figure it out and if we did before then there was a good chance that a stronger chin will develop.
I think we really have it figured out now. You will see that after we started the Whole 30 in August 2011, we had nose success: Colson Whole 37 Update – Success So Far!. I guess I took that for granted and kind of forgot about it. Yesterday, Colson reminded me. He was drinking a huge glass of water non-stop. When he was done he said “Do you know how I can drink that much water and not stop?” I said “No, how?” Colson replies “I breathe through my nose.”
Woohoo! I hadn’t realized that Colson’s nose breathing remained clear and strong. I had him showing me all day yesterday that he could breathe and every time I asked it was clear as can be.
Colson understands that he will not be eating wheat or corn, which I believe was causing his problems, and that he can breathe because of that. It is such a relief and validation that food is the basis for EVERYTHING!
