Emily Deans’ blog has been a fantastic find, and this post on BPA is no exception: Time to Freak Out. Sensibly. If you don’t check in to Emily’s blog every now and then, it is a great read and worth the few minutes.
Unlike Emily and her kids, I am not as lenient with Colson’s (age 8) food choices when it comes to prepacked foods. In recognition of Emily’s food decisions, she is stricter than almost all Americans, but even cleaner food requirements (some people would call these tougher or “freak out”) can work too. Colson doesn’t get juice boxes or Capri Sun, for example, no matter what.
We don’t freak out about bogus juice packs or birthday cakes, but Colson knows they are poison and willingly avoids them. In situations like this where these death treats are provided we will give him some dark chocolate or an Izzy, which is fizzy fruit juice in a single serving bottle. Not perfect, but we are willing to live with a once or twice a week Izzy event.
The kid will tell you that corn syrup, often contained in cakes, cookies, and other processed items, will inflame you and kill your heart, for example. Just the facts. People can add whatever emotion they want to them, but the facts are what they are. Perhaps some day Colson will ignore them, but if he does, he will know how to get back to “the good food” when he is ready.
