A friend of mine asked me yesterday if there was a way to search my blog. “No,” I said. “I need to figure that out.” This morning I finally did. The search function is at the top of the right hand column of my blog. It is quite fun (for me at least). Amazing how long it takes to do the simplest of things sometimes!
I am still processing yesterday. It is almost a bad movie, but I swear it is real life. Here goes.
This is the email I sent to our homeschool group at 7:00 p.m. yesterday:
My cat disappeared 6 weeks ago. Today a woman who cruises Craigslist sent me a found cat ad. The cat in the ad looked just like mine and was described like mine: about 8 - 9 years old, tabby with rust, declawed front paws, spayed and found near my home. The finder took her to the vet who determined that she needed a tooth extraction.
I went to see the cat, but the person who found her had this crazy dog and it was hard to get a good look. I shook the treat can and the cat started to come out from behind the dryer...another trait of my cat - coming to treats. I got a sort of ok look at the cat, saw the kink in the moderate-length tail and some markings, and thought she was mine [trying to account for weight loss and change in fur texture due to poor nutrition], but it was crazy in there! When I got her home, I realized she wasn't mine!
I took her to the vet, thinking I was going to keep her anyway because she needed a home and I was down a cat, but he said that she needs 2 tooth extractions and shots to be sure she is safe around my animals, and she is out of my price range (about $350 including exam fee). To fix the teeth and just get a rabies vax is about $200. I already paid the exam fee of $65.
So, I took her back to the person who found her, and she is taking her to the pound tomorrow.
If you are interested in her, my vet says she is about 6 - 8 years old. She was very sweet at the vet's office. She is mediocre with my dog, whom she knew about 3 hours, and she can't stand my happy go lucky cat. Her original "finder" has a cat in addition to her dog, and she said that after 4 days the cats were still pretty severe enemies.
That is probably not enough time to really gauge her, but if you are interested in having this cat, who is healthy other than her 2 teeth, and you don't have young kids or other cats, please let me know.
Thank you for listening to my ridiculous mistaken identity story.
This is the email I sent to my homeschool group at 8:45 p.m.:
You all are not gonna believe this! Lost since June 4, my real cat just returned, super skinny and loveable. Just now...ok 10 minutes ago. WE CAN'T BELIEVE IT! This is the freakin' Twilight zone!
Over and out...unless you want to adopt the other cat.
At 9:30 p.m., Colson and I are walking our dog, Nelly, who patiently waited and waited for her walk last night. Ryan was consoling the neighbor, whose dog ran away yesterday (but came home at 10:00 p.m.!). It is completely dark. A woman drives by, parks her car, runs out and asks us if Nelly is our dog, because she has a dog “exactly like her.” I say yes. The woman and I start chatting, set up a dog play date since she is in my neighborhood, and I learn that her name is Laura, which is my name. I know it sounds nuts, but how weird that I get taken in by an imposter cat and then get stopped to talk about a duplicate dog by someone with the same name?
That was one weird day. My old lady cat, Mattie, is home and doing all her usual things with extra affection (usually she is a bit of a curmudgeon). She woke me up several times last night, our young cat woke me up, and my dog at least was quiet. I am tired and happy, but they are all getting kicked out of the bedroom tonight.
July 4. What an exciting day that is for me! I am writing about it now, as it is just around the corner. July 4 is a day for me to stop and reflect on the great Founders of our nation – both the well known husbands and their incredible wives. I am a big Revolutionary War era history fan, and only on July 4 can I combine the greatness of America’s Founders with food and health!
If you want to a great read, check out 1776 by David McCullough, followed by his book John Adams. Absolutely awesome. After reading these books I understood bravery, boldness, skepticism, creativity, energy, sacrifice, and so much more. The great Founding Fathers and Mothers stood up to the most powerful nation in the world, when they had almost nothing in comparison, and said "Enough." They craved liberty, which Thomas Jefferson brilliantly expressed in the Declaration of Independence.
George Washington inspired the men to fight for freedom during a brutal eight year war with Great Britain. The hardship he and the men endured is unimaginable today, and the miracles that they accomplished are almost unbelievable.
When money to finance the war was unavailable and hope seemed lost, John Adams created the financial alliances in Europe that were necessary in order for America to win the war. He almost killed himself doing it a couple of times over.
And what about the founding Mothers? Granted, it was a “man’s world” then and the strategizing and fighting were primarily done by the men, but the men wouldn’t have succeeded without the wise counsel of their wives. In addition to adding their brainpower, the women kept food on the table, kept the children safe, and found a way to keep a roof over everyone’s head. They did what they had to in order to make life work in circumstances that are beyond anything we can even remotely relate to.
How does this apply to your health? The lessons drawn from these great men and women put today’s hardships into serious perspective. Today, American citizens as a whole are controlled by corporations. They are told what they need and what they should buy. They are told that they should Super Size it. Whatever “it” is, it is hardly food. The “food” that Americans are told to eat is highly processed and addictive. Most Americans are losing their health (or already have lost it), and they have given their liberty to corporate America.
I am astonished by how many people are blind to the takeover of their freedoms. Fortunately, an awakening is occurring, with awareness of and demand for local, healthy, unprocessed food from small farmers growing. I wish that each of us could convince three people to reject corporate America and its poisonous food in favor of food that nourishes us, clears our heads and makes us strong.
Thomas Jefferson said it best: “Every generation needs a new revolution.” Now is the time to take control of our health. This is easy in comparison to what Jefferson and the other Founders had to undergo in order to gain their liberty.
John Adams (my favorite revolutionary because he truly knew that Abigail was his equal) stated: “In politics the middle way is none at all.” Taking control of your health is a journey of many steps, just as the Revolutionary War was. It has been an eight year journey for my family, and we have come far. In fact, we have been on it almost as long as it has taken to fight the American Revolution. Some people criticize us and some people are threatened by us, but we are not going to slide backwards and lose our health and freedom. Once you regain yourself, there is no middle way.
Benjamin Franklin was a prolific wordsmith and is the most quoted Revolutionary leader. This quote is timeless and has taken on a new meaning today when applied to America: “I saw few die of hunger; of eating, a hundred thousand.” Could that be any truer in America? So much food, and most of it poison. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes are all on the rise.
How long did these great men live? They all ate healthy, unprocessed food and they all exercised. Thomas Jefferson died of natural causes at 83. John Adams died of natural causes at age 90. Jefferson and Adams were very close friends for a number of years and then fell out. In their later years they rekindled their strong friendship and both died within hours of each other on July 4, 1826 - the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Ben Franklin was 84 when his adventure ended in 1790, and what an adventure it was!
Adams enjoyed the longest and most robust health. All three men had healthy minds until the end. Considering their incredible lives and the many perils they survived without the help (or detriment) of modern medicine and modern food processing, their stories are energizing.
Ask yourself if you would like to be a revolutionary and lead a vibrant and groundbreaking life as exemplified by these men, or would you rather fully relinquish your liberty and be controlled by the corporate "food" and medicine machines. The takers of freedom would prefer for you to acquire diabetes or cancer as you continue to eat their “food” and then be filled full of drugs to prolong your “life.” Which would you prefer?
