This fantastic post is from my friend Shelly. Many gluten sensitivities and intolerances are undiagnosed, causing people to suffer and medicate. Hopefully Shelly’s success will bring inspiration and hope to others who are suffering with similar symptoms.
Stomach issues have plagued me for years now. I cannot even recall when they initially started. It has been that long. Symptoms included lower abdominal pain (similar to menstrual cramps) and sometimes so severe that I could barely stand up straight to walk, and extended belly. I have seen many doctors throughout the years and have been given prescription medication to try to curb the pain when it happens, but actually those meds made me feel really loopy and almost in tears. I have ingested gallons of Mylanta, Tums, Pepcid AC, etc. with only brief moments of relief. I have tried to read and self diagnose, but couldn’t determine if the problem was dairy, acid (from coffee, wine, spicy foods, tea), fried foods, processed sugar, of what exactly the culprit was. Recently, the problems have become more frequent. What used to be every few months now had turned into twice a week. The only way I could get relief was to only eat white Basmati rice and lay on my couch with a heating pad on my belly until it subsided.
My friend Laura recommended going to see her doctor, Ken Morehead at Oriental Health Solutions in Durham, NC. I had never been to this type of doctor before, but at this point was willing to try anything. The night before I went to my appointment, I had to fill out a very lengthy questionnaire dating back to childhood listing ailments and accidents over the years. When I met Ken the next day, I felt that he was a very knowledgeable and likable individual.
After an hour with him on my first visit, he suggested that I change my eating habits to eat 3 squares a day and incorporate 2 healthy snacks in between the meals. He also told me things that were lacking in my diet, such as “healthy fats” (i.e. meat broth, organic butter, nuts) and protein (i.e. bacon, salami, eggs). I usually would skip breakfast and when it came to eating any type of “fat”, shied away from it because I was a calorie counter. I always worried about gaining an extra pound. Also, was never much of a snacker. This style of eating was totally different from how I was used to eating before. Funny thing is that instead of gaining weight from eating more, I actually dropped a few pounds. Ken also suggested that I stay away from Gluten. He thought this may be the underlying cause of my stomach problems.
After eating differently and excluding Gluten from my diet, I could literally feel an improvement in as little as 3 days! The food I ate “went down well.” My stomach felt settled and I didn’t experience any more belly cramps or bloating! A week later, I decided to test out eating items I knew included Gluten, and after 3 days experienced the belly cramps again. I went back to eliminating it from my diet, and felt better immediately.
At my next visit with Ken, he gave me a supplement called Gluten Flam and instructed me to take two at night for the next 30 days before I went to bed to help me heal. He also said that if I accidentally ate something with Gluten, then to take 5 to counteract what I had eaten. I did as he said and felt even better! We decided to do a blood test next to find out definitively if I was allergic to Gluten. There are two different results that can test positive to Gluten intolerance; one being that the allergy is temporary and you could one day heal and not have issues with eating it again, and the other being that you have a lifelong problem with it and should never eat it again. My results came back as the latter.
This would explain why I have had problems for such a long time! I am still learning what does and doesn’t have Gluten in it, but will be Gluten free for life! I feel so much better and my quality of life has improved tremendously! Whereas before, during the week, I had low energy, and couldn’t go out and do as much because I was usually home on the couch in pain, I now feel great and am out and about all of the time. I had no idea I was causing my own issues by my daily choices. It’s definitely an adjustment to change your diet, and Gluten seems to be in everything, but it is so worth it to feel good again. Also, it has been a couple of months since I have made this change, and I really don’t crave the stuff that I used to eat (i.e. pasta, bread, battered food, cereal, etc). More and more restaurants have Gluten Free menus, and I am now seeing all kinds of Gluten Free items in the grocery store when I shop.
It is amazing to me how after years of physicians only treating my symptoms and never giving me an explanation of the root cause of my issues, then I see Ken the first consultation and he hits the nail on the head with exactly what my problem really was. I am thankful to finally have an answer and am on my way to a permanent Gluten Free, happy, healthy, life!
