Absurdity in the Kitchen & Making Dog Food

I just have to laugh. Ryan is freezing grapes. He cleaned out the freezer of the empty containers that I have (and store in the freezer) in order to make room for the container he uses. My containers don’t always need to be washed because they are lined with waxed paper and usually a baked nut product is stored in there. It is easier to just leave them in the freezer. Tonight, in spite of Ryan’s best efforts, the grape container fell out of the freezer and the frozen grapes went everywhere. What was the offending culprit that caused the fall of the grapes? Two sets of chicken bones to eventually be used to make broth.

Ryan angrily handed me the bones and said in his angriest voice “Do something with these.” I said, “No – move your frozen grapes. My bones are fine in this freezer.” He said no, smashed the bag to make it flatter and then broke the bag, requiring him to repackage the bones. He hates bones. I watched him repack them with an amused look on my face, which didn’t help things.

He stomped off with my bones down to the big freezer. I said while he was down there he needed to bring up some Nelly broth. “Nelly broth, what’s that!?” Ryan said in his frustrated and still somewhat angry voice. I said it is for the dog. It is made from a second boil of bones and I use it to cook her lentils in when I make her dog food. Ryan initially fought the idea of making Nelly’s dog food until he read in the Dog Whisperer books about how horrible the “meat” is that is used for dog food. Then he embraced it.

Now he was frustrated by one more new thing in our food rotation/repertoire, and our repertoire is far from simple so a new thing can seem overwhelming. There is always one more thing to do, one more thing to learn and more time to be taken up by preparing food. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

And yes, I know, grapes are not in season. Ryan bought some unsanctioned grapes from Chile that are not organic. Luckily his body will shed the toxin quickly…when I give him some Nelly broth. Ha!
