GAPS Victory for Colson

We had a wonderful Christmas with my family, and we allowed ourselves to stray immensely far from our usual diet. Colson in particular had a huge cookie festival for four days, followed closely by Ryan, and I did my share of cookie eating and other off-diet eating too. We did it joyfully, but the consequences showed for Ryan and me. Ryan’s food cravings ballooned, and my itchy scalp was back. I was back on GAPS the day after we returned home, and Colson and Ryan followed a week later.

Now for the really cool part. Colson’s stuffy, sneezy nose has been back for at least a year. It was not as bad as when we began our GAPS journey, but still bothersome. He hasn’t been on GAPS for I don’t know how long, but over a year at least. So what has a little over a week on GAPS brought him (his only exception to GAPS is drinking raw, unfermented milk)? A greatly improved nose, that is what! He can sleep with his mouth closed and no more snoring. It took only a week! That is lightening quick, considering it took about six months for that same outcome when we started GAPS 2.5 years ago.

Colson isn’t thrilled to be on GAPS – actually he says it is for losers. But this almost eight year old boy does grumpily smile when reminded that he can breathe better. It it is getting harder to do GAPS as he gets older. Colson says he can go for four weeks, so I will stick with his recommendation. At least he is making the connections about food and his health, which will serve him well when he is older.

Ryan hasn’t eliminated his food cravings, but my itchy scalp is almost better. In fairness to GAPS, though, Ryan is finally giving up beer for awhile, which is what has been allowing those cravings to continue. Give those gut critters an inch and they will take it.
