Sneezing with Every Bite He Ate

What can cause Colson, my mildly sneezy allergy kid, to sneeze and blow continuously for two days? I think it is eating more sugar in two days that he has had in his entire life. Literally.

Colson’s sneezies and snoring are profoundly better after the GAPS Diet. They were almost completely gone at the end of our time on the diet (nine months) and the five or so months after the diet. They then crept back up in intensity, but not too far. He was still much better than before GAPS.

Last Saturday we were invited to some friend’s for dinner. It was a pretty mainstream America dinner and we went for it. As a compromise with Colson so that he wouldn’t feel left out when the store bought cupcakes were being eaten, he and I made his favorite oatmeal cookies with spelt flour and Rapadura sugar. We rarely make these (this was our third time), but now that he is well into his seventh year it became clear that he needed some sweet that tended toward the Standard American Diet (SAD).

Those cookies were the best oatmeal cookies ever! Perhaps it had to do with not being able to find the ground cloves, causing me to grind them.  Colson and I ate five or six each! I quickly had a headache for about a half hour. Colson seemed to be fine. Then we went to the party and Colson had some more. Our host brought out the homemade sugar cookies that were iced with Betty Crocker frosting. My plan was blown. I let Colson dive in and ice the cookies with the other kids, and then I let him eat one (they were fairly large). On top of that he had hardly any dinner.

The next morning the sneezies and non-stop nose blowing began. Ryan would have enjoyed the oatmeal cookies, but there were none left by the time he came home from work. What did I do? I made some more of course. Ryan took some to work (he has been working A LOT!) and the rest were left to Colson’s and my devices. I showed some restraint, but when I was busy, Colson and his friend ate a bunch, with Colson having seven. The non-stop sneezies and nose blowing intensified. By the end of yesterday, Colson determined that he had too much sugar and he was going to quit cookies, because they made him feel so lousy. In fact, he says he is back on GAPS.

I am amazed that my seven year old boy can diagnose himself and put himself on and off of GAPS.

How is that for a “With Every Bite You Eat You Determine How You Will Live” story?

And think about all the grain, even if it is supposedly "healthy", that was ingested with those cookies. Truly a heavy load for the body to absorb.
