Disney brings a complex set of issues to me. As an environmental planner in Florida working for the state's environmental agency, we not so fondly referred to it as Rat Kingdom for a number of reasons. Then I had Colson. Get me within 10 miles of the place with Colson in the car and I can't wait to go.
We weren't going to go to Disney while in Orlando this week visiting our family to celebrate Colson's and my Dad's birthdays. Then some dear friends decided to send Colson and me, and we had a wonderful day there. Seven is a great age to visit.
The issue that raised its head while we were there is food. The food is absolutely disgusting! It is the paragon of Dr. David Kessler's book The End to Overeating Dr. Kessler is the former surgeon general under the George W. Bush administration. He has written a whale of a book exposing how the food industry "unfoods" our food. Unfood is my untechnical word to describe how they pre-digest it and prepare it to make it addictive. The grilled chicken at Disney tasted so fake and was so easy to chew that it would have been amazingly easy to overeat if I wasn't so disgusted with its awful, fake, processed flavor.
Just so you know, you can bring your own food in. As much as you want. I found out after the fact. At least I am healthy enough that it didn't cause me any discomfort, which would have happened a year ago.
And, for those of you wondering, Baby Nicky, my one year old nephew who became deathly ill after vaccination, is doing great! We have so enjoyed seeing him for the last four days. He held his head up for a whole 35 minutes tonight! Rock on, beautiful boy!!
I recently came across an interesting series of posts on Whole Health Source regarding malocclusion (teeth which need orthodontic care) and our modern society. It is lengthy, as it has nine parts, but very interesting. I'm reading it through slowly (3 kids interrupt a lot). One of the reasons stated for malocclusion is food toughness. That soft rat kingdom food, and other processed foods, are part of the reason our teeth are so bad. We don't have to chew enough! Check it out here at http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/2009/09/malocclusion-disease-of-civilization.html
