Kefir Cures Hammy’s Eye Infection

We have this cute little old man, blind in one eye, McGyver, always on the run hamster named Hammy. He is near the end of his life and has been slowing down…finally. The other day he woke up with an eye infection. I called the vet to find out how much it would cost to see him and, with treatment, the assistant estimated $100.

We are crazy about hammy, but $100! Not to mention that Ryan is laid off and funds are scarce. I didn’t want him to suffer, and at least the infection is in his blind eye, so I didn’t immediately run to the vet. After about 20 minutes it hit me…put kefir in that eye. It is a probiotic. I took a little, rubbed it in his eye, and the next day he was almost better. I also fed him some kefir grains, which it turns out he loves. On day two his infection is gone.

Food as a topical medicine…what a trip!

HI! I just put kefir in our six yr old dog's eye because he keeps getting reoccuring eye infections that we unaffectionately call "poopy eye". I'm glad to see you also tried kefir. The meds the vet gave our puppy for the poopy eye work but the infection keeps coming back and I feel like I am creating stronger bacteria when I kill the week ones. PS: I give them kefir for breakfast and dinner with their food. I hope Hammy is still doing well. Thanks for your post. Anne
