I continue to ponder the reality that with
every bite you eat, you choose how you will live and how you will die, and I am
offering a corollary related to children because they are the powerless victims
of the Standard America Diet (SAD) and the standard American reality I discuss
in With
Every Bite You Eat…
Children, especially young
children, do not have a choice in how they eat because they must eat what their
caregivers provide them. Here is the corollary: With every bite you feed a child you choose how they will live. If
you feed them real, non-processed food, chances are they will have a vibrant,
fun and exciting childhood and a great launch into adulthood. If you don’t,
then their childhood will likely be pitiful and possibly psychologically
damaging. Once children are older and capable of gaining knowledge and choosing
what to eat, they will hopefully have a chance to undo the damage of their
younger years.
As people consider the
reality of growing childhood diseases such as diabetes, cancer, ADHD and other
autism spectrum disorders, all of which are affected by food choices and all of
which can be prevented or cured by food, they should know that with every bite
they feed a child they will choose how that child lives.
Here are two cases I
witnessed that very much touched me.
I
was at the pool and the mother next to me verbally beat up her eight year old
daughter about her lack of willpower regarding sweets. The daughter has adult
onset Type 2 diabetes and she is a Big 5 junky (cookies, cake, candy, soda and
bread). Mom didn’t help by feeding her daughter Big 5 treats and then berating
her. In short, the girl’s mother unwittingly made her a Big 5 junky, fed her derogatory
psychological messages, and then blamed her for her problems. Her solution? Put
her daughter in a children’s diabetes study, medicate her and continue to feed
her the foods that will kill her. This poor girl’s parents were not ready to
learn that their daughter’s problems could be easily solved without psychological
scarring and disease. They broke my heart.
Another summer I watched a child
who was an absolute Big 5 addict. The child was the same age as Colson but couldn’t
keep up on the playground. Play usually lasted 5 minutes or less. The child was
often ill with headaches and stomachaches and was very listless. Even short
walks were a tremendous chore that caused stomach pain. Initially, the child often
requested sugared, processed foods, but because I didn’t have any, the requests
stopped. The child would not eat my real food and often ate only one “meal” a
day away from my house. The child knew about its Big 5 addiction and was
powerless to fight it. I literally watched life pass this child by.
These stories are all too
common, but they do not have to be the reality. In both cases, the child can be
cured by eating real, unprocessed food. The Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride will quickly free both children. While both
have significant physical damage caused by junk “food,” they are both young and
can rebound strongly.
