Today is Farmer’s Market day, one of my favorites. The farmers are awesome, their food is great, and it is affordable! As I wrote in Stressful Times and Eating Healthy , money is very tight for my family of three. We are watching almost every nickel and hoping to pay all of our bills.
The one thing I will always spend money on is our food. I do not buy all organic, as it isn’t necessary in the case of some fruits and veggies, but our food will always be non-GMO, free range, hormone-free and antibiotic free. I very rarely buy any fresh food from the store…the Farmer’s Market has almost all that I want.
My weekly food budget is below. By making broth with meat bones and using that broth in bean and rice dishes, we can stretch our money pretty darn far. Our one “luxury” is honey. We would have a hard time drinking our kefir smoothies without it, but I imagine we will adjust if we have to.
We keep the costs low and the quality exceptionally high by American standards. Comparing our weekly food budget to much of the rest of the world magnifies our gratefulness that we are privileged to eat the food that we do.
Turkey 7.50 (3/4 pound)
Raw Milk 8
Misc 20 (usually baking/cooking ingredients)
The cost per meal is $2.38!
Wishing peace and abundance!
