My son has the most fabulous life. Homeschooled, follows
his interests, lots of friends to play with, many new experiences, and a family
that loves him like crazy! We celebrated his birthday twice so far. On the
actual day I made a homemade, honey-sweetened cake of course. It was tasty, but
not birthday cake quality. So…off to Whole Foods I ran for a sugar-filled cake.
We ate it for two days.
Then it was the kid party. This homemade, honey-sweetened
cake was yummy! But I could not figure out how to get around the powdered sugar
frosting in order to feed 16 kids and their parents, so I used it. More sugar!
Next was Washington D.C. We brought our own breakfast and
dinner, but we ate at the Smithsonian for lunch and had one dinner out (that
dinner was GROSS!) We ate too much bread.
What did all of this mean for Colson, Ryan and me? Colson
doesn’t seem any worse for it, but Ryan and I are another story. My almost five
months with no body odor has come to a screeching halt, as has Ryan’s. He never
achieved the “no odor gold medal”, but he was close! Hopefully a week or so of
clean eating will take care of it. Ryan has also put on a couple of pounds,
which he blames on the bread that we had for sandwiches and pizza while in D.C.
Weight loss was never a goal of ours, just a by-product of the food adventure,
but we do enjoy our lighter selves!
What’s next? A trip to Michigan to see the grandparents,
aunt and uncles for another birthday celebration. Of course, ice cream cake
with more sugar!!
Colson and I will have to do some quick shopping and
cooking in Michigan so that we have some healthy food to counter this birthday
celebration. Obviously I am not opposed to having some Standard American Diet
(SAD) foods on occasion, but they are just as their acronym says. I get very
frustrated that I am not able to communicate the importance of healthy food to my
parents, sister and brother, yet I have helped so many others. I helped a new
and inspirational client today who is very fired up to do the right things for
herself when it comes to food. I wish that I could transfer her insight and
energy to those that I love. I always have to remind myself that we are all on
our own journeys.
/hugs to you - hope you feel better!
Easy frosting: mix cream cheese with honey, butter and your favorite natural coloring (beet, carrot and such). That's it!
