In this economy, saving every dollar is important. Along
those lines, I am again emphasizing the Farmers Market. We do supplement from
the grocery store with some purchases, such as dried beans and lentils,
carrots, peas, garlic and cheese. These costs are relatively small, except for
the cheese because we eat raw, organic cheese.
Below is the cost of a typical week’s purchases at the
Farmer’s Market. As you will see, it is possible to eat for the entire week
with only these purchases.
Produce
(except apples): $34
·
Onions – 4
·
Kale – approx 4 servings
·
Cucumbers – 10 pickle size
·
Oranges – 9 juicing oranges and 6 navels
·
Tomatoes – 10
·
Cauliflower – 1 large head
·
Bananas – 6 medium
·
Green Beans – 5 or 6 servings
·
Red potatoes – 8
·
1 Dill plant
·
1 Rosemary plant
Apples:
$35 for 40 pounds of Pink Lady (minimal spray). This
will last us about 5 to 6 weeks. We will eat them whole and in several yummy
dishes, such as the raw apple pie, which is in the recipes section under the
picture of Colson and me.
Meat
and Eggs (free range, hormone-free, antibiotic-free happy chickens): $22
·
Whole Chicken – 3.25 pounds
·
Eggs – 3 dozen really big eggs (we use them
all in our smoothies, pancakes, muffins, and egg dishes)
Total
Cost: $91
The chicken will provide the three of us with at least
four meals as follows:
·
Roast chicken meat combined with chicken broth,
beans, cheese, and spices (2 meals)
·
Chicken broth combined with lentils and
veggies (at least 3 meals). To learn how to make broth, click on the recipes
link or read in my October posts about broth and its importance to your health.
We will also eat an egg dish and a beef dish. I previously
purchased the beef (actually one-sixth of a hormone-free, antibiotic-free,
grass fed cow for just over $3 a pound), and I will make shepherd’s pie, which
will feed us at least three times. I will be able to freeze portions of some of
our meals for another time, cutting costs in the future.
I hope that you are convinced that the Farmers Market
is worth your time. I would very much like to hear about your adventures, so
feel free to post a comment!
