We all know that sugar destroys teeth. Tonight I am
writing this just after my temporary crown fell off, and what is left of my
back molar is totally exposed and unprotected. This molar is the fifth victim
in need of a crown due to my youthful poor diet and dental hygiene. The sixth victim will get drilled
in January. Because they are my backmost molars and experience the most
pressure when chewing, they will be covered in gold due to its strength, and I
will get my first “bling.” Anyone who knows me knows how totally appalling this
all is.
How can you save your children from this problem and
many more? Get rid of the refined sugar. White sugar, brown sugar, powdered
sugar, raw sugar, turbinado sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and more. Teach
them to brush and floss regularly.
What
else can sugar do to you?
Lori Lipinski’s article, “Replacing Refined Sugars with
Natural Sugars One Step at a Time” on the Weston A. Price foundation’s website
provides a fabulous discussion http://www.westonaprice.org/transition/sugars.html.
According to
www.joyfulaging.com, sugar
causes 123 terrible problems for people. There are innumerable articles to read
detailing the horrible effects of sugar consumption.
Getting refined sugar out of your diet is fairly easy, once
you stock your kitchen. My family uses raw, unfiltered honey as our
replacement. We have also used rapadura (dehydrated cane juice) and maple
syrup. We have settled on honey because of the dietary changes we have selected
(no grain, no beans except navy, green and lima, no dairy except fermented and
a few select cheeses, and no sugar except honey).
Our results so far?
Old injuries
no longer hurt, including:
· My fractured back (13 years of pain gone)
·
Ryan’s injured knee (20 years of pain gone)
·
Ryan’s and my injured shoulders (14 years and five years of
pain, respectively, gone)
You can experience phenomenal healing that you never thought
possible if you clean up your diet, starting with sugar. Here are a couple of websites that my family uses to
guide our eating and recipe choices (we are following the GAPS Diet to rid
ourselves of our seasonal allergies):
Quitting refined sugar is
not about willpower
Before you blame yourself for lack of willpower to resist
sugar, please know that it is not about willpower. You have populated your body
with organisms that feed off of the refined sugar and other processed
carbohydrates you eat. The bad guys in your body pretty much demand that you
feed them. If you want to regain control of your body, you have to stop feeding
them. In order to offset their howling demands, increase your intake of
nutrient dense foods. My family found that bone broth was invaluable for
curbing our sugar requirements. You can read more about our success with bone
broth at this post: http://movingstronglyforward.typepad.com/moving_strongly_forward/2008/10/bone-broth-its.html
Here is the link to the bone broth recipes by Sally Fallon
that I regularly use: http://www.westonaprice.org/foodfeatures/broth.html.
If you are making a chicken bone broth, remember to cook the chicken first and
pull the meat off for another use before cooking the broth. I promise this will
be the best broth or chicken soup that you ever had.
I use the broth for soup, to cook lentils in, to sauté greens
and other veggies, and before I gave up rice, I cooked my rice in it. I am sure
that you will find some creative uses, too. Please write and share what you discover!
