Bone broth (chicken, beef and lamb) is the most beneficial food that I introduced into my family’s diet, without a doubt. The reasons are numerous. You can learn how to make bone broth from the recipes in Sally Fallon’s Nourishing Traditions or through the article Broth is Beautiful.
My Health Challenge
I was diagnosed with moderate osteopenia (the precursor to osteoporosis) at age 30. I was shocked. That’s an old woman’s disease, and I was only 30! When I was diagnosed I was bench pressing over 100 pounds, could run 10 miles, and thought I was doing great. I took the supplements the doctor recommended to prevent further bone loss and was told to forget about rebuilding my bones. At 37 I had another bone density scan. No change.
Three years later, I met Dr. Ken Morehead, co-founder of Oriental Health Solutions. I have been treated by many complementary medical professionals throughout my journey, and he is the greatest healer that I know. As this blog continues, I suspect that you will be jaw-dropping amazed to learn the many ways he has helped to heal me.
Regarding bone broth, Ken emphasized its importance at several points during my health recovery, taught me some different ways to serve it, and then had the audacity to suggest that I eat it for breakfast! For breakfast! After some paradigm shifting, I now eat it for breakfast – with greens, onions, butter and vinegar to boot!! I used to be one of the Americans who limited their breakfast options to foods that fail to nourish them, and in some cases poison them. Anyone else ever have sugary cereal chased by a diet soda? I have!
Now back to the osteopenia story. I was making and eating bone broth sporadically, still new to nutrient dense eating. Holistic Moms Network guest speaker KerryAnn Foster, Cooking Traditional Foods, who is recovering from the ravages of celiac disease, discussed the health benefits of taking butter oil in combination with Cod Liver Oil (CLO) after a nutrient dense meal because it helps to rebuild teeth and bones. KerryAnn is an inspirational person with loads of information that can help you on your journey.
I was fascinated by the butter oil/CLO combination, and of course I asked Ken about adding butter oil to my diet (I was already taking CLO). He said that it would absolutely help me rebuild my bones. I also have very unhealthy teeth and am about to get my fifth and sixth crowns, which is no surprise given the shape of my bones.
The Results
How did I find myself in this mess with 60 year old bones and teeth? My best guess is that I probably did not fully absorb calcium as a child due to the fake food that I ate. I was loaded with cavities and those lovely mercury fillings from the age of seven. I exacerbated calcium and bone loss as an adult, again due to the junk I put into my body. The cavities kept coming, followed by the crowns. I suspect that soda was the chief culprit. Anything carbonated helps the body lose calcium and bone density. Eating lots of candy and baked goods hurt as well. The acid and sugar in soda and the sugar in candy and baked goods force the body to leach calcium to keep its ph in balance.
I have been eating bone broth four to six days a week for almost a year and taking ½ tsp. of butter oil and ½ tsp. of CLO right after a meal with broth or other nutrient dense food. My teeth were once completely translucent, and they are now between two-thirds and three-fourths re-mineralized. I literally watch the translucence be replaced with a healthy, creamy coloring. I am hopeful that in another year I will be healed from osteopenia.
The fantastic outcome is that I am undoing the damage and literally watching the progress every day!
Hi Laura,
Thank you for sharing your story. It is very inspiring and empowering. I have been struggling with similar issues with my teeth. I have known about the benefits of using bone broth but have never committed myself to eating it on a regular basis. Reading your story convinced me to get started right away.
Thank you again!

Hi Laura,
thks for your comments. It is great to read that you were able to correct the translucency by eating the right foods. I have similar issues with my teeth (top and bottom) and was not aware that bone broth was beneficial. I can't have cod liver oil though, because it gives me a rash. It would be great to get some advice and recipes from you.
thks,
L

Hi Laura
Thanks so much for your encouraging blOg!!!
Have you heard of the bellicon rebounder? There's a video of a young woman who was diagnOsed with severe osteopenia and went from severe to moderate in 6 mOnths by using this particular rebounder. If you do a search under rebounding and osteoporosis, it should come up - or I can send u the link.
Love
